The History Channel Vikings TV Series saga is partly inspired by the true history of Scandinavian Vikings (Norway, Sweden and Finland) and Danes. La Saga della Serie Televisiva di History Channel Vikings e’ ispirata in parte alla vera Storia dei Vichinghi Scandinavi (Norvegia, Svezia e Finlandia) e Danesi.

Through many difficulties, I have summarized key points that allow us to understand and grasp the essential parts and characteristics of this compelling story no less than those that actually took place a few centuries before the beginning of the Low Middle Age. All enriched with drawings and graphics of an era lost over time.

Kattegat is the narrow sea between the peninsula of Jutland and Sweden and was not a real Norse city, at most it could be a clear comparison with the city of Hedeby, in Jutland.

Solar Stone

Sòlarstein, a solar stone, used in a special framework circle, gave a proper ability to polarize light, this is a property of the calcite or Spat of Iceland, so said Flateyjarbók. It happened only later, after the Viking Age, that in 1669 in Denmark Erasmus Batholinus made a similar invention, Kollsman’s heavenly compass, twilight compass, def. tusmorkekompas, item currently still in use in the civil and aeronautical military airlines that follow the polar routes. The Vikings realized by lookingthe light through calcite that they could observe the solar movements even when the Sun was hidden from their sight

PIETRA SOLARE

The circular dial in the first epoch was divided into the eight cardinal points existing in the ancient Norman horizon, only later in late Middle Ages, the notches will become thirty-two. The disc also had a central hole where a pin was set with a stylus to cast the shadow as an indicator of solar displacements.

GOKSTAD

The Viking Ship, Gokstad, is assumed to carry a crew of at least thirty or a few more, men and women, with a keel long 57 feet and about 9 inches, made with a single oak trunk: for a total weight of about thirty tons.

LINDISFARNE, Britannia

In 793 D.C. it is said that Northumbria was theater of spectacular storms with very impressive celestial electric activities, legend tells that thunderstorm impressed so much the minds of the inhabitants, who compared lightining and thunders to frightening flying dragons. Moreover, a great famine followed this.

But it was nothing compared to the arrival of the ferocious men of the North, Nosemen, who like lightning of those storms, in March of that year, some scholars believe that it was June, suddenly appeared inside the Monastery of Lindisfarne and from there continued their looting and devastation throughout that area. Some monks explained their arrival as a divine punishment for the sins of the people, citing the prophet Jeremias (Then the Lord told me: From the North the evils will spread over all the inhabitants of the earth, -1: 14)

BRITANNIA

Leaving aside the numerous divisions of the precarious British kingdoms at the turn of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, I think it’s a need to point out essentially amongst those kingdoms: Scotland, a pit of kingdoms and races, the Picts in the North (Argyll and Forth), the Welsh in the Cumberland, and another mixed kingdom in the Solway Firth. Then there were the Scots, and the Angles, and England: Northumbria, Mercia, East Anglia, Kent, Essex, were independent until the submission to King Ecbert’s Wessex around early 1800s, or just at the end of the 700s, and King Ecbert’s successor, King Aethelwulf, that in 856 had to accept a division of Wessex, renouncing Kent and minor provinces.

In 845 Ragnar Lodbrok returned with only two ships to Northumbria. Not much is known about how and what happened. Most likely his viking ships were shipwrecked due to some storm, but a true fact remains, the legendary Norse King was defeated by King Aelle, and captured alive.

Ragnar was kept in a cage for years, and in 860 he was thrown into a ditch full of snakes and left to die wrapped in the lethal bites of reptiles. Legend has it that his last words were: “As the little piggies will grunt when they will hear what the old pig has endured ..”.

In 865 an imposing Viking army, defined as Here (lit. Horde), def.Mycel haeden here, with more than a thousand men and women, arrived on the British coasts under the aegis of Ivar Yngvarr (Ivar SenzaOssa), Ubbe and Halfdan, sons of Ragnar Lodbrok,

They came to avenge their father’s death: the boars had arrived. In the East Anglia they procured many horses and carts, setting off for York. The British army lost York with a memorable defeat in 867. King Aelle was captured alive and doomed to the blood eagle ritual: once his back was surgically opened with a sharp blade, his ribs were separated from the spine, the lungs extracted and spread on his back like wings, and all this amidst heartrending cries or gagged wails of the condemned man. The brothers from York then moved far and wide across Britain: East Anglia was set on fire, and another King was captured, tied to a tree and made target of the Norse arrows: King Edmond, who later was proclaimed martyr.

FRANCIA

In 842 Norwegian Warriors entered in French waters during the reign of Charles the Bald. About seventy dressing-up vessels (from the Norwegian region, Vestfold) sailed across the Loire river raiding all the settlements on the banks and also sometimes inland. A date that certainly cannot be forgotten, June 24 during the celebrations of St. John the Baptist, the Vikings unleashed their anger in Nantes in Aquitaine, for at least a full day and part of the night, retiring the day later in Noirmoutier.

In 845, it was Hamburg that was besieged and set on fire. And it is precisely on this date that the historians date back to the historical certainty of the name of Ragnar (although some direct him to the assault of Nantes others dispute that he is the true legendary Lodbrok, or otherwise his death would not be explained in 860 in York if his legend had begun 150 years before that event) tha sailed across the Seine to Paris in March.

Charles assembled an army splits between the two banks of the river, thus planning to tighten the invader to pincers, but Ragnar directed his army against the lesser one, beating them harshly, capturing 111 Frenchmen and hanged them one by one under astonished and terrified glances of the other contingent of Franks who at that point thinned own ranks with countless desertions. Hence Ragnar entered Paris and sacked it on March 28th, on Easter Sunday. Like Nantes, Paris was attacked on a day of religious celebrations. Although Ragnar was hundreds of miles from the sea and could be swallowed up by shrewd military maneuvers, Charles paid him something like 7000 pounds of silver to obtain his immediate departure (so said danegeld).

After these successes it was clear to the Vikings that those lands in south-east of their Kingdom were rather weak and at the same time endowed with great wealth. Thus it was that their raids increased exponentially, especially in France.

In 885 a new siege of Paris began, largely driven by Rollo, a Viking of Danish origin. Under his leadership the next summer a final attempt was made to take the city, but in vain. The imperial army arrived in October and drove the Vikings out. Charles surrounded Rollo and his army but had no intention of fighting. He allowed the Vikings to go up to the Seine in order to devastate Burgundy, which was in revolt. When the Vikings withdrew from France in the following spring, he gave them 700 pounds of silver and befriended with Rollo, enough to give him Normandy in 911 in order to ward off other devastating Norman invasions. In 912 Rollo converted to Christianity to settle his ties with the French.

L’esercito imperiale arrivò in Ottobre e caccio’ i vichinghi.

This flow of incursions brought out another legendary name among the Norse ranks: Bjorn Ironside, son of Ragnar Lodbrok, or at least of a Ragnar. Bjorn also sacked French shores, and making a norse base in the isle of Oissel. Charles the Bald paid another Viking King to get rid of Bjorn, Weland, who had no qualms about killing and besieging other Viking brothers. Weland remained in the service of Charles the Bald and converted to Christianity. However he was challenged in a duel by a pagan Viking who apparently had not appreciated his conversion at all and was killed.

However Bjorn survived to the siege and with Hastein, another legendary Viking captain, sailed with more than seventy ships to reach Spain, Sicily, and Africa. Sailing on the Italian coasts they reached the Ligurian coast and then Pisa that sacked, and from there they pointed to South Italy.

The Sacking of Rome

For Vikings, what was more considered and looked upon with ambition and legend, more they were tempted to obtain it as a goal. That is why they did not give up even putting Rome under their goals. Hastein thus saw his shining Rome from the sea, and without thinking twice about the assault… but with a precise strategy, given that the city defenses seemed quite impressive. Hastein sent messengers to the city to tell their authorities that they were not bad men, and that they had been expelled from their Kingdom because they were opposed to the bullying of their Sovereign, they needed supplies, and to take care of their dying captain. The Roman authorities allowed them to dock on the coast and get supplies but not to enter in the city. The next day the messengers returned and said that their leader had died, and having been a great man and leader they desired a worthy burial for him, including Christian celebrations. Thus a long procession with a Viking coffin followed in the city streets up to the cemetery where the coffin opened and Hastein jumped out and started what would become a bloodbath and pillage. Later, a similar deception was then taken up by other Viking kings like Harald Hadradi, King of the Vareghi. But soon they realized that the city that had fallen victim to their looting madness was not Rome at all but Luni. Their anger subsided only after all the male inhabitants were killed and their women taken prisoner.
