What does the movie My Cousin Vinny have to do with me and the case of Mackenzie Shirilla? Practically everything. I am of Sicilian origin, like Vinny, and Mackenzie is falsely accused of being a murderer like the two boys, Bill and Stan, and lawyer James McDonell now needs to be reported to the Supreme Court of Ohio.
He decided on his own, without consulting his client or her family, to go to trial without a jury.
Now, I understand perfectly well that even with a jury present, the performance of lawyer McDonell would not have changed, in fact, it would have worsened, but this bad configuration remains bad exclusively due to McDonnell’s factor. I have had strong suspicions about this individual from the beginning.
A lawyer who does not take up a cause of justice to save an innocent person is not a good lawyer.
I believe that the most humiliating moment, not only for Mackenzie but for all citizens of Ohio and the world who believe in the Western Judicial System, was when, even after the verdict was read by Judge Russo, the police handcuffed the defendant,
a girl, a small and defenseless eighteen-year-old, as if she were the new Patricia Hearst or Karla Homolka. If I had been Mackenzie’s lawyer, it would not have gone like this, neither at the beginning nor in this inglorious end, a fall of style of a Judicial System wrapped in blind Fascism.
Those dogs should not have been allowed to handcuff that poor girl like that… and Lawyer McDonnell should have reacted to such a disgrace… but it was precisely this McDonnell who did not react from the beginning… he did not react.
Anyway….
Again, I always understand Mr. McDonnell. He is quite advanced in age, and therefore should make way for the young, should make way for a true Vinny of the situation, one who takes the truths that this Commentary Board has published, exposed, described, brought to life… down to the smallest detail, will go into battle in the courtroom as a one-man army and explain from the depths of his heart the multiple reasons that make Mackenzie Shirilla an innocent citizen, a victim not a butcher, a good girl not a degenerate, but above all a girl full of life who did not want to die before or after the accident, and who lived that pain still too great to be fully understood given her young age in the way she was able to do, shielding herself even with funny or stupid Halloween videos so as not to be led to madness and delirium, the true dark areas full of real death that no one should wish to experience even to our greatest enemy.
